Quote of the day: At last, after well-merited commendation

Types of information in this system

Five types of information is stored:
a. Information on persons.
b. Information on events.
c. Images.
d. Places and peoples.
e. Other subjects.

Information on persons.

The problems of synonyms and homonyms can only be solved by giving persons a number. Such a number could comprise some information, but in this system it does not: is more or less arbitrarily assigned. It is displayed sometimes, because the same number means a reference to the same person.
It was not always easy to determine whether two identical names referred to the same person. And in a number of cases it was shear impossible. There is not enough information. This is of course not a new problem (Livy did not know whether there were one or two sons of Aeneas called Ascanius), but when a number has to be assigned it is more consequential.
So if you find an incorrect designation please let me know.
A database was created to store the numbers with names and synonyms, and also some further information to distinguish them.
Some people and some facts were also included from encyclopaedias etc.

The database contains about 8000 persons together with some information about them, and more than 30000 links of most of these persons to Internet documents.

As can be seen from the menu different approaches to derive information from this database are possible. Nearly always you get in the end a person and a list of documents. In this person frame you will find a.o.:
Names
Three types of names can be present:
- Short names. These names are most often used in documents.
- Full names. For a discussion see the Names part.
- Synonyms. Further variations, including scanning problems.
Function. I tried to find a function for each person. Sometimes this was easy, like for emperors. Other persons had more than one function, and I had to select one. And for some I could find no function.
For a description of some problems see the category entries.
Year. This gives an Important year in the live of the person.
Of many persons the year of birth and the year of death is not known. Then this gives you an indication when they lived.
For an emperor it is the year he became emperor, for a consul it is the year he became consul for the first time etc.
Marriages, including concubinates and homosexual relations.
Grand-parents, Parents and children. If you click on one of them this person becomes displayed.
Adoptions.
For some persons also a reference to a source of the work of this person is given.

Information on events.

The meaning of the word event is used quite broadly, becoming something like "subject". It is possible to find persons involved in an event, and images describing it. Events are mostly displayed in the form of a menu.

Images.

Images are given as a link to images elsewhere. A link to the original document containing the image, and the original size of the image is presented. The persons depicted are also displayed. In many cases the description of an image was not sufficiently detailed to determine all persons displayed. E.g., there are many paintings of the "Wedding of Peleus and Thetis", but which figure is which god cannot be determined.

Places, areas, and peoples.

The terms of this groups are organized into two entry-systems:
a. Modern countries. Names of countries, places and sometimes peoples are combined, and links to other sites are presented.
b. Classical geographical terms. Quotations of the terms in edited documents are presented.

Other subjects.

This includes terms describing war and warfare, metals, jobs, family-relations, families, religious terms etc. as far as mentioned in edited sources.
