The Bataves were a Germanic tribe that lived in Holland at that time,
in the "Betuwe", an island formed by the Rhine and the Waal. In 12 AD they were submitted by Drusus They were famous swimmers. In 47 Corbulo digs a canal between the Rhine and the Meuse. In 69-70 they revolted together with tribes in Gaul, lead by Julius Civilis They had initially success, but due to conflicts between the tribes the Romans succeeded in subduing the whole region again.
